What is a Superbill, and How Do I Use One With Valyou?

One of the most common questions we get is about insurance — specifically, whether ValYou takes it, and what a “superbill” actually is. Here’s a plain-language breakdown.

What is a superbill?
A superbill is an itemized receipt for a therapy session, formatted with everything an insurance company needs to process an out-of-network reimbursement claim: the provider’s license and NPI number, a diagnosis or service code, the date of service, and the amount paid.

It’s not a bill you pay — it’s a document you can submit to your own insurance company after you’ve already paid for a session, to request reimbursement for some of that cost.

How it works, step by step

  1. You pay for your session directly.
  2. Upon request, we can provide you with a superbill for that session.
  3. You submit the superbill to your insurance company, either through their website, an app, or by mail — this depends on your specific plan.
  4. If your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, your insurer may reimburse you a percentage of the session cost, according to your plan’s terms.

How to check if this applies to you
Before your first session, it’s worth calling the member services number on the back of your insurance card and asking a few specific questions: Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits? Is there a deductible I need to meet first? What percentage of the session fee would be reimbursed? Is there a limit on the number of sessions per year?

Every plan is different, and reimbursement isn’t guaranteed — this is information your insurance company can confirm, not something we can promise on their behalf.
